A Big “THANK YOU” for the Gym
Posted by Jeff on June 16, 2009
It wasn’t long after Beth and I arrived here in May of 1990 that I began dreaming of a gym being built at camp. It was really not only a prayer request answered but a dream come true when camp finally opened its gym. One reason why I think it was so high on my “wish list” is because I was the recreation director back in my early years and every time the thunderstorms came I was left scrambling for ideas to not only keep kids dry but also to keep them occupied. One summer we had cabin skits in the shelter building. One time we had a group of high school students that crammed into the Kentucky building. Those were unique times it which you had to think very fast on your feet. It was also very stressful too.
Today we just funnel them into the gym and have fun there. Tonight we had such a storm so we had after supper recreation in the gym with all 92 campers. We even moved the store over there to keep kids out of the rain. Yes, it still took some flexibility from my staff and some adjustments from the recreation director but not nearly as difficult as the “old days”.
Let me take this opportunity to just brag on my staff this year. What an awesome job they did in rolling with the punches and allowing that great love of God shine through tonight, even through the rain! “Thanks guys!”

My son is there this week, hope you guys are having fun! Tell Tayler I love him and miss him, God Bless all the staff for caring for all the kids this week. hope you all have good weather this week.
My daughter, Rebekah, is there, too. First time away for a week. I hope she is having the time of her life. My camp experiences, not Camp Nathanael unfortunately, were fabulous and I still remember them very well.
Glad you have a gym too. I am the director of Hazard Perry County Senior Center and we have attended your senior adult program every year since its inception. Many times it rained and the gym was a blessing for us as well. Thanks for taking care of my little one.
You guys have had one of the toughest starts to a camp season in regards to weather in recent memory! I am excited to hear you and the summer staff were able to adapt and keep things rolling. Thankfully things are all sunny for Field Day today. Thanks for keeping us all posted through your blog!
nice commitment to the camp jeff!cant wait to see ya in july
wow….i cant imagine being cramed with 91 other kids in the ky building!……only one more week till camp!!!!!!….YES!!!….im sooooo psyced!….the day I come back from vacation is the 1st day of camp…but i’ll be there!!!!!!!…. :)
I do believe I was one of the children there the year we had to huddle into the shelter building to do cabin skits due to bad weather.
Of course none of us knew it was a last minute thing, and it still was a blast for all of us.
I do remember being there during some bad weather, but we always still had fun.
the gym is soooo nice i love to play all the games uncle nate always make me laugh. lol :D
Well, I was one of those campers back in the “old days” and I remember all to well bring crammed into the Kentucky building!!! Jeff do not despair we loved it!!! Well maybe not loved but anytime at camp was good times!!! I remember being soaking wet and hanging out in that building more than once , more than twice!! Oh we had a ball!! We played basketball,
foozball, heck we were in high school and played duck duck goose! Like I said it didn’t bother us to gang up in there!!! I came to camp for ten years and I never got to see the gym or horses or a lot of the new stuff but my kids will!!! I love that thought!!! My greatest childhood memories are there at camp! I saw Jeff at Walmart in the corridor this week and left Walmart thinking of camp… Great memories that I’m so glad mg kids will get to have. I can’t wait to shuffle the kids to camp it was one of the best gifts my mom ever gave me.I Love all of the people who serve the Lord by giving to camp Nathaneal.
